A short history of curtain rails
Curtain rails as we know them today are a relatively recent innovation. But it all started at the beginning of the 20th century with the development of rails equipped with iron sliders, at the time when noise management was not a priority.
It was in Switzerland that rails were developed to become much quieter, when an aluminium track with Teflon rollers replaced the previous metal on metal solutions.
Comment fonctionne le rail à rideaux moderne ?
Curtain tracks are designed to make pulling curtains as easy and quiet as possible, while being durable and not compromising aesthetics. To achieve this, the equipment has an internal guide with sliders which allow curtains to be fixed, these than can freely slide to open and close. These tracks in particular should not be confused with decorative curtain rods, which work with different types of rings.
The curtain rail, in tune with today's architectural trends.
New buildings have a preference for clean lines. Around 2010, it became the norm for curtain tracks to be built into the plaster ceiling, an aesthetically interesting concept.
However, this also greatly complicated the build. To obtain an acceptable result, it is now imperative that the job be done by professionals who are capable of installing the rail without joints (especially if it is a short distance rail) and who take the care not to allow plaster or paint either on and in the rail. Without this care, it is impossible to achieve a satisfactory result – your curtain will regularly get stuck, and the fix will include changing the whole now inbuilt rail, which pushes the costs up once more.
Quelles sont les solutions ?
If you want to install curtain rails, but do not have the professional installation skills, you can opt for a rail mounted on the ceiling. The result might be slightly less pure, but functional.
If this is not the case, ask a specialist to install the rails and opt for a rail with a flush-mounted profile according to this sketch (see drawing).
This consists of a flush-mounted profile that is screwed to the slab. The final rail is clipped into the flush-mounted profile. This technique makes it possible to have a track that is flush with the ceiling, but above all to have a visually clean and aesthetically pure result. The curtain glides smoothly and quietly.
The final track should be installed at the same time as the curtains are being installed or at the end of the work, when the site is dust-free.
Rail profil d’encastrement ou pas ?
However, the final choice of track should take into account the weight of your curtains.
It is possible to create "curtain boxes", i.e. recesses in the ceiling. This sollution hides the rails without losing the quality of operation. To get an idea of the result, read our article "Villa by the lake".
It is also possible to create, in collaboration with a carpenter, a wooden rail in which a VS track can be fitted.
